The kits included an instruction book, needles, and yarn. The students really enjoyed getting their gift and the supply of yarn was helpful in these last weeks of the school year when the yarn supply was dwindling.

Meanwhile, projects and creativity are alive and well in our neck of the woods. It has been fun getting to know my new students as well as having some of my old students take my class again. As before, I am adjusting to working with this age level.

First lesson: Senior girls are a sub-culture of their own.

I'll just leave it at that for now.

One thing is the same, though: KIDS CAN KNIT! In just a few weeks, look what the high schoolers have whipped out.

Representing for the boys:

A fun dishcloth.
<img style="cursor:pointer; Our Christmas card this year was a picture taken at The Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson. We toured the home in June on our Washington D.C. vacation and the tour was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. The photo was taken by a kind and unsuspecting tourist who did not know we would hold him hostage until he got the shot just right. Thank you to whoever you are!! My son then Photoshopped (is that a verb now?) the photo to create differences in a second photo. Both went out in the card.

There are 8 differences between the two shots...did you find them all? Answers are below.

1. Santa's sleigh
2. Wreath over door
3. Missing tourist
4. Other tourist's shirt turned pink
5. Missing window under gable of the house
6. Extra spot on tree where branch was trimmed
7. Darin's watch is missing
8. A letter on Connor's shirt is changedWendyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00049570428304463460noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3254265702230531742.post-49678814826803101442008-11-13T14:03:00.001-08:002008-11-22T18:26:22.481-08:00Knitting is TightThis is what one of my students declared the other day. He wasn't talking about tension or gauge, though, of course, sometimes knitting can be loose or tight. No, he was talking about the cool factor of knitting. That I wish someone told me that I had to read. I would gladly stop housework chores for 30 minutes, plop down on the couch and read. Just think how many books I'd read if someone told me I had to?

Now what if someone told you that you HAD to knit for one hour each day. I think I would let out a large exaggerated sigh, "Oh I guessssss so!!!" (So as not to let on that I secretly like the idea--they might not make it my requirement anymore.) Just think how much knitting would get done!

This is how it is for my students. They spend one hour (or thereabouts) each day in a situation where they are required to knit. Rough life eh? But just look at how much gets done!

A lovely dishcloth.
<img style="cursor:pointer; Once again I have a great class with a mixture of knitting skills and abilities. Several have returned from last year eager to move on in their knitting and to make some exciting projects and several this year are brand new knitters. I would especially like to welcome our 5th graders who have joined the class and already they are doing quite well. Here is what is in the works already:

The Monster Bear lives on.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRmaKbz07hETQ1NMPCF6fwe47ZMvUtefEZGLTldInwGaZHhyYpe2vBaiVEtE7F-F1NJEWl-6v05G7oNGw_O4E2nyJnsjzAmDGIls6urM_FrFmP1QOUjlmuTA-AmpdlupsuMz0qulEfFf1c/s320/IMG_1302_1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247419103010312002" />

Our first class sweater in progress.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhACnrUuUZhL9BIlHcdg6KwWd6mC6sGHjD6ag0NvKgBA3AXFnNT-iGa7n_EHiAtdsDE2IbcFLt08BoekVTl-acVrBYSxoynQ8gme3R8SBEEnou2mzP6-1KPjzytrWddIS_f7vXsO4jc3Ltg/s320/IMG_1306_1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247419113666088434" />

A <del>pretty</del> handsome hat.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkEUXsYO-PA9tDmADZFLI2SVcaBIhlK_CDWny0PO5vrrSOZW7IOO4HINE-xU8bfyl1RtqXaEOp-veJtIW7dqQ5R09R9QcRPb8yunyI9i_hVIXc3PSfdHM_pT1lYVV8dYZBlxhYoKiL06ER/s320/IMG_5411.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247419112917111314" />

Go Lemoore HS!
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCqPqnWdZJxTZLk0YUFJWbN2JVmoy729IWkh2xoFtBoboEN7_3MVzkB7z1buSFO0fGWQHxBg-qQjo28Dy4I45FO6LRmnap4AfjKpKzuVxc1G-r4sEm2IWpli5QDo5uB3FxRSUk3OpX_c25/s320/IMG_5413.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247419118712292754" />Wendyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00049570428304463460noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3254265702230531742.post-55657226403493859292008-05-25T10:36:00.000-07:002008-05-25T11:19:31.010-07:00It's SHOWTIME!As with the end of each quarter and particularly so with the fourth, there is a frenzy of knitting. Students are desperate to finish just one more project. There is a surge of needle and yarn purchasing and discussions amongst themselves of which new tools they now own. The projects came in steadily and now we've had our last day of knitting class until next fall. Here are the goods.

These two pair have ended the Second Sock Syndrome for our class. They are the first two seconds ever completed.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTjfU-fybLeAHSJFkbtaD9TGmjRCGr58WtnxTR_DgKcvP5o8nWSbHFGbPX-esw9Zo_LiqKS3M9PmoXUARW3xXiS5KNXmPcf6kgrnh15jHzYA1eFlGykg-Y8MkX2LvTrRU5h4QvW0HLawp0/s320/IMG_4800.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5204373785152797378" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNKwYV7Hx0JFVcVHqLxxpBHyEP6Rvsq0Pnc4Fn484R6zOYwQarEbif6WZyj7NfnleaoPbylt5R9pOlmw-EN07yozHoqbhfqP7nYNkjsff3F1xuQygFa_xQ675wb5bPEwRVAgEtBQZEUYUy/s320/IMG_4801.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5204373798037699282" />
Here is a fine example of how one mistaken purl row on the knit side becomes a design element when we add another in a strategic spot. I had heard about this before. It's not my idea. But it is my own design, as I was so desperate for a hank that I pulled out the Tinker Toys and started building without bothering to look up an already established design. I guess I literally was re-inventing the wheel.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmn7Y08Jxp__C4-inxEtcl64sj4ad9kQy2WfphRsgxc5S8Qme44jyIpq7Mj-HGtkcRMpQDaBfRMntkQskCb-1rebSMClptlpaeRlloQZPYIgNc-md4t8AYZARioqYBvMwRKGqEOTV7dZFT/s320/IMG_4748.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5200662854971677442" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQDklxM2cU8__8Zc-XxB8O-l-5aoHyF1YyC-mNf1BxxLrHCwFp25u5CjIyAhxFJeloLULLMcZFGUhY_i1TZShQ82RZNqld2GhmbmywDPDTDL0c18ike_g-o4v-NdcP5MT-yR3SusvnZXWA/s320/IMG_4739.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5200662863561612050" />
I just purchased nine beautiful hanks of Cascade 220 to make a tote bag to felt. After touching the yarn and admiring the hanks (I do love the way yarn looks in a hank), and making everyone else in the family touch it and admire it, I pulled out my ball winder and began to plan the pattern. With everyone at work and school, there were no extra hands to help keep the yarn in line while winding. So out came the Tinkers. It took only minutes to build and a few adjustments before I was winding. I even saved some for later so the whole family could see what I built and how it works. Of course, my son had to give it a try too. Although I love the way swifts look and have considered buying one, I especially love the resourcefulness of this one. It cost no extra money and will take up no extra space. It's two knitted rectangles, from different color yarns, perfectly dollar bill size and very neatly sewn together. And to top it off, he sewed on the coin pocket. At his unveiling of the wallet to the class (he made most of it at home), he was immediately commissioned by another teacher at our school to make an identical wallet for purchase. I implemented this a few quarters into this job as I was pulling my hair out trying to teach K2togs and YOs one at a time to students who were trying new patterns a bit above their level. So I decided to put some common stitchery into this one little swatch and it has really paid off. Now when they graduate on to a pattern of their choice, they shouldn't get too stuck with some of the basic stuff. The advanced sample actually is based on the sample from the Sweater Workshop, by Jacqueline Fee. In her book, she takes the reader through a series of ribbing, increases, decreases, buttonholes, and more. The idea is that when you're done with her sample, you have all the skills you need to make a sweater.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhjAwF7X9bGRccHwn8GTpDD-_vvMgPUUQE7TS042Am0p_W5HegYmhBSXXFFtvKQJbJADmGNOFwPX-1X7nd4z2AFbhla_FiNbYYzVZOLNshrus9eR9aPIds80JIgOaBuEqlhY-8vz7jILjz/s320/IMG_4559.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5189238713653749378" />

So our sample is scaled down, but same idea.

We have a cabling section, ribbing, color change, increases, decreases, fairisle, and YO buttonholes.

As one of my students was on the decrease section, she pointed at the pattern and said, "I don't know what that is." The pattern read: k1, s1, k1, psso. So I slowly read it to her pointing to each letter: "knit one, slip one, knit one, passed the slipped stitch over." Her response? "OMG! It's like IM!" I was actually very impressed with myself for knowing what she meant, though I have never texted anything in my life. But it got me thinking. This junior high group of kids, so quick to learn new technology--even when it means learning a new language like text messaging--will learn this knitting technology in the same way. Once they complete their advance sample, I can speak to them in knitting language. When a student asks, "What do I do now?" I can reply, "You will K2tog at the end of needle one and SSK at the beginning of needle 3." And they will understand MY language!!

I enjoy their look of understanding as I speak this new language and also the look of confusion and awe from the newbies, which, in turn, adds to the esteem of my more advanced students.

Well, got to go, talk to you later. Junior highers are chock full of them. We have a teacher at our school who had been out ill for some time. One of my students had the amazing idea, all on her own, to begin knitting a scarf for this teacher and to have each of the students in the class have a turn at it. We used the feather and fan scarf pattern from the Mason-Dixon Knitting blog. The pattern was easy for me to teach to the one student, and in turn, easy for her to teach the four row repeat pattern to each of the other students. I loved watching her take on this project and she motivated the other students to participate. Beauty (sigh).

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtjUDl99S1LWZq5DxQ5FWpcd8Bk37NXwNGkM1OWJ4uwTaw4XHLzi5p1lh3kirlFqZFI2VafAqbfu8EiGS9OS0NxvOdGaQFy0WGFzyQyvUE1MpyA0X_pS492gH5RBHS8cqpu-V4IUxppr1-/s320/IMG_4544.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5184459218028085122" />Wendyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00049570428304463460noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3254265702230531742.post-6575331599713860352008-03-31T11:54:00.000-07:002008-03-31T15:41:25.341-07:00Knitting Survey
I was spoiled by my 3rd quarter knitting class. Not that I haven't enjoyed ALL the other quarters, but in particular, 3rd quarter was exceptionally enjoyable. The combination of students made for a quieter class session each morning--not too much drama or controversy. There were fewer than normal students (about 14-15, depending on the tutoring schedule). And they inspired one another on a daily basis. That was the pleasure. Sometimes I felt I could slip into the background of the class and watch them knit and chat and look at patterns and figure out what they wanted to make next. It was amazing. The teacher who soooooo graciously shares her classroom with me and all the stuff that comes with me suggested I survey the students about some of their experiences while learning to knit. Fourteen students were surveyed. Here are the results.

1. On a scale of 1-5 how much do you enjoy the craft of knitting? During each 9 week quarter, there are three three-week sessions during which selected students are pulled from their electives in order to receive more individualized instruction from their core teachers in subjects they need help in. Great system. It works very well for the students who need extra help.

Because of the way our system is set up, I can have students actually attending knitting class only three weeks out of a nine week quarter. The other extreme is that students may return for more than one quarter and stay with me the whole time. Sometimes they're with me for consecutive quarters and sometimes they're gone for nine weeks (or three or six) and then return to me.

Obviously there are a variety of lengths of time that students can be in my knitting class, however, time in the class hasn't been the key variable in performance. Some just catch on quickly, while others don't.

I've been trying to observe this learning process in order to improve my own teaching abilities. In my observations, the one occurance that baffles me the most is when I have a student (and there have been more than one) who has a very difficult time with knitting. He or she tries daily for the 3-9 weeks that they are with me, but for some reason, the finished product is filled with holes, extra stitches, split stitches, etc. It just doesn't happen for them. Then they leave me for awhile. Then they come back. (Here's the baffling part.) When they return, they pick up their sticks and start knitting at a MUCH higher level than when they left. It's like they've been knitting and practicing the whole nine weeks they've been gone! But of course they haven't. They have no idea why they can knit soooooo much better now than when I last saw them in my class. It's a bit of a phenomenon for me. It has really interested me in the whole learning process. Perhaps we need foundations. Then a break. Then return.

Here are some examples of some knitting from these students. You'll see a variety of abilities here, but for me each one has demonstrated amazing leaps in his or her abilities.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFekuwyr92iwfphVJc1UCGDLJFHE8euHsSZVZlpCzQ-2pZLP5wwMMrzYJWN8IC1PgFvz7yfFSTvQ5ITUgA68XbTyScEsqJi8_N1_WXxHwFRiRMnv_-qsJMeu1xezrkU4WVHo7Y6SItYViC/s320/IMG_4300.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5180770798898527906" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0eCfm3pLU4WvWuaZeY_y4tJm3K173jhLxqY1DDHSG5JLRhlxeo4b6NUkPBFCyehDmaNeqWHWFm7gpozy6RHMU48nV1F3oyJWyE5yVkYRRt40xnM4sDKSz4YnVxCcajaNuYludS8Gw_-M6/s320/IMG_4302.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5180770803193495218" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2OYWpJxgHBW16n1WGyc60Tl6NatoQTfKFTMErT2IcGp8HEv4d1-SRoPuO_XhTVUcEMz4UY-slgT5nQZ_RJQ498BysBDI_2yCvLZK0RAMCzkQFNz8v5XHMo07WhgqZ4Ahj1KDTcOnG40aX/s320/IMG_4364darker.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5180772813238189778" />

Sorry...no "before" pictures. It started with one student who was looking through the book for something to knit. When she showed the picture to me, my first thought was, "Why would you want to knit THAT?!!" But then of course, it became clear when I remembered this is JUNIOR HIGH knitting. Of course! Brilliant idea!! Let's get started. This little project was so fun to watch. She used her increasing and decreasing skills and learned to make I-cords. She also got a heavy dose of finishing by sewing up seams and attaching the legs, arms, and ears. The little guy (gifted to her sister) caught on like wildfire and spawned a huge crop of more Little Monster Bears. <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGGrD3OSdvXSwP6JRDycnHG9PnBZcaSe_T6eRaA5XYQMyl8Gx_vdkKmXk9uEdyBFJVtWXs7oAOgBO7Xr1I3JrVoA7un_td9LEKncSGUXFQNNtWSrwDIbcEw_us7AdULzz4tu-7V9Vici4g/s320/IMG_4362.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5177321020010710546" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDhu_pyd082yng9dswa3UW1meZ6C0TgAFHEKOndKt2F6WzqTEAWbKLCVSZO12fbxQ6XGEinz0S0wKXgaWgLYw861YvH9VihCWGYb39Qlr053rIZbLBzGzBMpW9Yla0almswzD6FszgyEnQ/s320/IMG_4393.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5177321028600645154" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcpBbehRmlbMf20Ojf8K5-Q3qJB-nsYArtVoyvvVLRzS3cgprhiMUJxPGh6SJVCt1vMZXtAW8ql0EGNqPHOCZ2C55rV16GLm8JDQHzfiQr4ezGV6OmLqn3I2VgN2HTkpaVvi_iyyIapLAA/s320/IMG_4394.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5177321037190579762" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgep6y8_7hrIuStLdl9hrwDozeZ0Th0w9d-xPrR3cxgArhf1lL2e_Salv5VSkdpHXh3vuKcWqSwnB2bJ9yomeIrrExJVuwfeWDYyxw1_QzBnqTMnYcffoYlNyCg-Rw57Lnhor0L-o6yOTIA/s320/IMG_4398.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5177321045780514370" />
Don't you want one too?Wendyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00049570428304463460noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3254265702230531742.post-40159791361748955142008-03-06T12:46:00.000-08:002008-03-07T19:28:25.058-08:00The One Row ScarfIt baffles me what interests and captures the attention of the junior high knitter. I'm always bringing in ideas, easy patterns, showing websites, etc. Most of the time it's received with lukewarm attention. They're polite. They come over to the computer to look at it. Make a few comments. And then nothing. I thought the ballband dishcloth would be so fun for them to do, but not one took it up. Then I come in with the pattern for Stephanie Pearl-MchPhee's One Row Handspun Scarf. I hand it over to a student on a piece of scratch paper. I say, "Here, try this." She humors me. Next thing I know, she's taken off with this scarf and finishes it in a matter of days (which is warp speed in junior high knitting). Everyone declares it as having the look of "store bought," which in my class is a huge complement. And the NEXT thing I know, there are two more of the same project being started. Here is the first scarf (which has already been gifted) of this little trend.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRhToiecN3L6ms6gh5SEZ0EL06-6ZDwQ36_svdmztxSwElzrijK59tleoUI_KR09c1AdTE-9pQZFFiAmUNy00vTNMY086mXrvZW0nqTh3e2ckvWu4lyN8FeLERm4bPTSoMT7SJ3Du9Ghun/s320/IMG_4356.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5175206641970628082" />
Bernat's Softee Chunky.

And here are the others.

Bernat's Softee Chunky. Then my neighbor borrowed the book from our local library and let me look at it for a few days. Wow, is it addicting! With three WIPs and two abandoned projects I had no business starting anything new, but what's a little dishcloth? The Ballband Dishcloth knit up so fast and was so fun to do that I am tempted to make more. I love pulling it out of my kitchen drawer to use. Then there are the Moderne Blankets, based on Log Cabin quilting. I pulled out every blue cotton yarn I own (some purchased 16 years ago--ouch!) to start my own garter stitch log cabin dishcloth. Thumbing through the book inspires me to play with yarn in new ways and to tap into whatever creativity I might have.Wendyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00049570428304463460noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3254265702230531742.post-90643544236484346232008-02-25T13:12:00.000-08:002008-03-07T19:23:28.464-08:00How Do You Like Them Apples?Let me tell you...some of my students are on fire!! There is one boy in my class who particulary cranks out hats like there's no tomorrow. He's fast. He's smooth. A perfectionist (almost). The whole class is amazed at how fast he can knit. I explain to the students that they will learn how to use knits and purls effectively to make a simple pattern. They must learn (in order to make a square) that keeping the same number of stitches on the needle in each row really does matter. They must learn in the stockinette pattern how to tell the difference between the knit side and the purl side as well as how to tell which side they are actually on. They learn to even up their tension and that though it may not look exactly even and perfect, a dishcloth can still be wonderfully used. I assure them that making the dishcloth is exactly what they need in order to move on to making something that someone would actually wear. Most of them accept this task, while others balk. But overall, they all seem to do a pretty good job.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhHkyPXgDDiHyUDL0kEGskeA46VwSeZj7t1-Kt7eYJHyHt3i7NXMDzmFlvjldLn-LZp7295bAxPCeD6tgICut4Ig2MM6QINX64ZWPyNBF7oV5EbMWHIOYdikVmUxLvNvm6zCU1SZ6jtFl9/s320/IMG_2594.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5166207869059589106" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDXY7igVljTQTIAcIsYMHTHMw9zcDGOtoil6vUuAP0aoMAourf8GISzEZ-lQ_z7q2muOTixEFVsjbNZOPBznh48O25cQoOJos5Ooy-uCuNW2rH3vAvpqgxxGdygon0D39wJwdDwcNSNZBL/s320/IMG_2597.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5166207877649523714" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiAnqBnrvwzBfvhhNQZVVt73uqXJuB_RsWU9TzgWq9VzN-FLh8pUnTArJ7SodTZJY_atmBizBSt5V24uV7KRAcQpYuHrPV8Xx4ZsOghA8sSlM5NmL97lBM8IetNu6KsRdxYT64iLjmBOnT/s320/IMG_2764.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5166207886239458322" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnH90lm1t7aj8YqyFbjnvGNy0IDFxKYnRB4wW0nZTc6CLOkyL6HjROrqgokQZ03GX7tcb240CC2BFxn_sAw3qSdrghIESSyE5DvIIQr2AnKaJUqg92xf5y_pKU7AobAu-lby9Fk78KejAN/s320/dishclothcrop.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5166207894829392930" />
Isn't that a pretty rainbow?Wendyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00049570428304463460noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3254265702230531742.post-28678233202197958142008-02-07T16:14:00.000-08:002008-03-07T19:23:28.465-08:00Busy Little BeesMy husband has been on a bread making kick lately. I bought the yarn as a throw in to make it up to a $25 minimum purchase from Little Knits I had never seen or touched the yarn before, but just liked the colors. My husband had been wanting an earflap hat and when I received the yarn, I knew it would be the hat. The yarn is Noro (I want to say "Transitions," but DRATS! right now I can't find the label). It felt a bit twiney and scratchy at times as I worked it up, but as a hat it is soft enough and my husband has a great head of hair to protect. The pattern is adapted from a baby earflap hat pattern in One Skein Wonders.

My daughter snagged it before my husband even had the chance.
Wendyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00049570428304463460noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3254265702230531742.post-36292439406068530982008-01-19T13:21:00.001-08:002008-03-07T19:23:28.466-08:00Getting the Hang of This Okay...so blogging regularly is harder than it seems. I have a new appreciation for those of you who entertain us weekly with your witty thoughts.

I just want to get up some of my projects that I've worked on this past fall/winter.

These matching hats were for baby Levi and his dad, Jake. Levi was born last fall. His dad is the perfect kind of new dad who would be game for a matching hat with a newborn. The pattern was adapted from a pattern from Knitty called "Flower Power." The yarn is made up of lots of unknowns from my stash.

This is my first argyle. I love it. It was for baby Kaleb. Knit in the round with Lion Brand Wool-Ease (and something white). My own pattern that was scratched out on paper and unlikely to be found or read again. I was very impressed with myself after finishing this one.

Here we go with my scarf and hat pattern that I made for my husband. Being half Greek, I really wanted to knit something with a Greek key design. After searching the web and my old Harmony Guide to Knit Stitches, I came up with this pattern. It's semi-Greek key. You have to look hard with an open mind. I also love this set and am very impressed with myself for designing and making them, but mostly I am so pleased that my husband also loves them very much and has worn them regularly all winter. That really is the best. Yarn is Sirdar Highlander Chunky...purchased soooo many years ago for a vest I made for myself and had a few balls leftover. Now I'm down to one ball left. Don't know what it will become.

After purchasing the One Skein Wonders books for myself and my class, I fell in love with this baby sweater pattern and had to make it. I do not have a baby girl. I currently do not know any baby girls. This sweater was truly made for the love of the pattern and for the love of the yarn, which was Sensations (a Jo-Ann exclusive) Bellezza Collection Cosetta. Someday my princess will come. I'm sure I'll know her when I see her. And she'll get the sweater. Until then I will be trying to figure out Zimmerman's method of the afterthought buttonhole to get some buttons in this thing. The hat also came from one of the One Skein Wonders books.

I learned to make socks last year (about July/August 2007). I started with some baby socks and then did a hat to match. Socks are amazingly addicting and I've had a pair going ever since.

I purchased my first sock yarn at a nice little shop in Fort Bragg, CA. Navarro River Knits. The nice lady gave me much needed encouragement that I could do socks. The yarn is Plymouth's Sockotta. It was also my first self-striping yarn...you can imagine how much fun these were for me.

Don't let the dolly freak you out. He seems concerned about wearing these out and so does not wear them but for special occasions and only when wearing Birkenstocks (unlike his constant use of the hat and scarf set). I wear mine whenever I'm wearing something that will match. His socks are from the Earl Gray pattern from the Yarn Harlot's website. I used Knit Picks Risata in Ash. For mine, I used Knit Picks Felici in Clay. I followed the Yarn Harlot's sock recipe from her book Knitting Rules! (which is perfect and memorizable) with a K3, P1 rib throughout the leg and instep. Wearing them makes me happy.

Finally, my most recent finished project is this felted bag. They do not have the patience and perserverance to attack a knot from the inside and carefully follow strands of yarn that seem promising to lead to untangledness. They are, however, in giving me the mass of knot, following the golden rule of my knitting class: WE DO NOT CUT YARN! I learned (the hard way) that as soon as a knot develops in class, the junior high knitter's fingers begin to twitch for the scissors and want to make the knot go away fast. "However," I say, "we, being in a public school, are on a yarn budget, and cannot throw yarn away!" All knots must come undone. Which means, of course, that I will do it. I do have, now after several weeks, a couple of devoted knot undoers, and this makes me happy.

Aside from knots, this is also what it looks like in knitting class. Once the students complete their finger knitting (which takes one or two days), they start on needles. I cast on 14 stitches for each of them with a worsted weight acrylic yarn of their choice. Most of the yarn we use was my mother-in-law's leftover from maybe the 70's???? It's a good beginners yarn. We start with the knit stitch and the little poem that goes with it:

"In through the front door,
Around the back,
Peek through the window,
And off jumps Jack."

I attempt to teach each one a sort of Continental/English method of holding and wrapping with their left hand. This was all very weird to me since I have been knitting for 15 years with my left hand, as I am left-handed. I realized, though, that it would have been nice to just learn right-handed the first time around so that pattern reading would not require brain acrobatics. I promptly forced myself to learn to knit right-handed in the weeks prior to working with the kids. And I also force all left-handers to knit right-handed. I'm sure they'll thank me later. That being said, since I am not with each student each minute of the class, they all seem to come up with their own weird way of holding/wrapping yarn--only the weirdest of which I correct.

With their first 14 stitches, they work on the garter stitch for several rows...until they seem to have it. I try to enforce that 14 stitches must remain 14 stitches, but I think one student made it up to about 43. It looked like a thong. We revisit the poem every so often reinforcing that Jack must jump OFF and not ON to the other needle. Some students become very upset with Jack and come close to cursing him for being the culprit of so many added stitches.

From there they move on to purling. This is the point when Jack is not the subject of curses, but the purl stitch itself. I was tickled one day when the 8th grade teachers told me that my students would show up to class not with their usual gossip and complaints of the day but with comments like, "I've got the knitting down, but I can't stand this PURLING!" If only they could hear themselves.

When purls are executed beautifully and the students see their ability to stockinette, they begin to build confidence and develop their fondness for knitting.

Then we start ribbing.

This seems to be the crucial act that separates those who "get it" from those who do not. It tells me if they have ANY idea what the difference is between the two stitches. I haven't figured out a better way of saying "the knit looks like a V and the purl looks like a bump (!!!!!!!)."

Oh well, they all seem to eventually get it and they end up making something that looks like this.
And it's nice.

Then, finally, sometimes THIS is what it looks like when you're a junior high knitting teacher.

He finished it today.

I'm so proud!Wendyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00049570428304463460noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3254265702230531742.post-85709105944080398082007-10-24T11:13:00.000-07:002008-03-07T19:23:28.467-08:00Aaaaahhh Finger Knitting This week begins the second quarter of the school year and an almost all new crop of newbie knitters. I have a few returnees who will be great helpers with all the newcomers and I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do beyond the beginning projects. But interestingly enough, from the 21 second quarter knitters, 12 of them are boys!!! I love it. Boys in knitting class make for a very nice balance to the what is usually an all female atmosphere. They bring a sense of humor and a calmness. They deal with knitting frustration in a more relaxed “Oh well it’s no big deal,” manner. Whereas girls are more likely to see themselves (and dramatically act it out) as total failures when they drop a stitch. I’m excited to work with a more-boys-than-girls class this quarter to see how they influence the classroom climate. I’ll also be challenged to find projects to inspire them...scarves and purses abound in project books and my boys do not get excited about such patterns.

The first project I do with my students is finger knitting on four fingers. Students choose yarn from the class stash that is either bulky weight or they choose two skeins of worsted weight. As I’d never finger knitted before teaching this class, I found some great directions in an article from Knitty.com. Throughout the class session I repeat, “Behind, in front, around, behind, in front, around…” Finger knitting is a great way to explain and demonstrate to beginners what knitting really is. How you take some yarn and make it into a fabric by making loops and connecting those loops with new loops. I often refer back to it when we move to needles as they take one loop off a needle over the top of another. It seems to work for most.

And, believe it or not, it quickly separates the fast learners from the not-so-fast learners. I’ve seen some very strange looking fabrics coming off fingers when the directions aren’t followed. While some students are still figuring out how to wrap the yarn for the first time around their fingers, others already have a scarf in the making. While some students are eager to bind off their four stitches and jump to needles, others beg to continue finger knitting for days/weeks on end.

But, regardless the speed they learn to knit, with confidence I told them all today, “You will all be knitters.”

And they will.

Get ready. Here come more junior high knitters.

Wendyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00049570428304463460noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3254265702230531742.post-31951315835848829362007-10-18T11:06:00.000-07:002008-02-12T13:30:52.418-08:00I Would Do it for FreeBefore I ever set foot in a junior high school classroom, I pretty much thought anyone who chooses to teach junior high is a little strange to begin with and spending too much time with 12 and 13 year olds only magnifies those...uh...interesting personality traits. To be honest, I was slightly afraid of the Junior High child. People in that age group have such an unpredictable way at going through life. One never knows what will be blurted from the mouth of a junior higher. We all went through that awkward time in life, some more gracefully than others, and can remember the "weirdness" that took over our personalities for awhile. I've never sought out to revisit that particular time in my life and didn't really want to be reminded of it by seeing too many junior highers at once and certainly not on a regular basis.

That being said, I'll admit I was a little excited about teaching a knitting class...so much that I didn't quite stop to think that I would be stepping into the world of Junior Highers.

I've taught the Knitting class for two quarters now. I see junior highers every day (the class count averages between 16-18). As with most situations in life, my fears of what it would be like were much worse than reality. I was pleasantly surprised to find that most of the time the students are actually quite nice, somewhat intelligent, occasionally really mature, and on most days charming and endearing.

After the first few weeks of teaching the class, I was amazed at how much fun it was to teach knitting to junior highers. I would talk about it every day at home to my husband. "This student said this," or "so-n-so learned how to purl," etc. It seemed I should not be having so much fun at work, after all work is supposed to be work. But it was all my husband could bear when I announced one evening that this job is so fun that I WOULD DO IT FOR FREE!!!

Since then, it has been the question in our home,regarding any task or job that one might do, "Would you do it for free?" My 12 year old son is in search of finding that magical job that my husband would do for free. Frankly I would wish that everyone (especially those I love and hold dear to my heart) could find that great job in life that is so fulfilling and fun, that they would gladly do it, just because it's great.

I love knitting and I find an immense amount of satisfaction in passing on the talent and skill to another, especially a young person.

Especially a junior higher.Wendyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00049570428304463460noreply@blogger.com2
